You see these flip-flops?
These are about the ONLY shoes that my precious daughter will wear. I don't know what we are going to do come wintertime.
You see, in order to avoid tragic meltdowns, I have to give in a little. And that is hard for me. I try to refuse to be controlled by an 8 year-old, but sometimes it's just not worth the fight. Especially in the mornings, when we are getting ready. At the beginning of the school year, I bought her a few pairs of really cute shoes (that she tried on in the store) to go with her outfits - brown ones, black ones, etc. None of them got worn, not once. We recently gave them to a friend at church. It is hard enough to get her to wear her tennis shoes (which she is REQUIRED to wear on P.E. days). They all "bother" her in some way. They just don't feel right.
Same with clothes. She will try them on in the store and like them. But 5 minutes before it's time to leave in the morning, something is wrong. Either the clothing itches, the sleeves feel weird, it moves a little too much in the shoulder area, you get the point. Sadly, many of those outfits have gone to a friend as well.
I have been on strike for a while from buying her ANYTHING - hey it's been nice on the pocketbook!! But she can't wear the same thing every other day, can she? I gave in the other day and we went to buy her some jeans because none of the others worked. We had a long conversation before we went. If I buy her something, and she doesn't wear it later, she will have to pay me for it. I did give in and buy her some cute tan suede boots, you know the kind. She had to have them. Well, she wanted to wear them to school yesterday, and when she came home, she immediately took them off because they were hurting her. I hope we are not going to have a problem there.
She is very artistic, so maybe she will become a fashion designer one day, and make her own clothes.
My point: If you see Hayley wearing these black flip-flops in the snow, please do not judge her mother. :)

Ha Ha, our daughters are just alike. I think we have actually had this conversation before. I recently after several years of arguing have given up. As long as it is weather appropriate she may wear whatever she like. Now, don't get me wrong, it's not easy for me. It absolutely bothers me. But like you I have learned to pick my battles. So lately Madie has been going to school in her own styles. I keep thinking the same thing though, maybe one day she'll design her own clothes.
