Many of you know that I am an avid Dave Ramsey follower. Let me rephrase that. I am an avid Dave Ramsey READER. I am still working on the FOLLOWING part. Jay and I have decided to participate in our church's Financial Peace series. I think everyone, regardless of his or her financial portfolio, should take this class. I joked to Jay the other day that we'd better go out and buy everything that we have our eye on before Dave tells us that we can't have it. Okay, maybe I was a just a little bit serious. That's the problem, right? Get what we want quickly, before we have time to think about it. Because we just crave it so badly. We can't say no.
A customer of mine came into the office the other day to pay on a past-due bill. She confided that she was reading Dave Ramsey. She said that she was having a hard time with it, because he wants everyone to "get three jobs and sell their cars." She thought that was just a little too overboard for her taste. I don't really think it's about working three jobs, or selling everything you have (unless that's what it takes). I think Dave's point is that you must be WILLING to do WHATEVER it takes to stay on the path to financial freedom. But we just don't want it to hurt too badly, do we? Let's be honest - we really want the best of both worlds.
As I was thinking about that conversation tonight, it opened up my eyes. I think that's how we are in our spiritual lives as well. We desire to have that close relationship with God. We yearn to be on the path to eternal freedom. We just don't want it to inconvenience us too much. We don't want it to hurt. We don't want it to be uncomfortable. Just a little something to think about.
What are you willing to give up???

Very good post Christy! We are a greedy group of people. I am amazed at how childish we act in not wanting to give up anything. We haven't done the financial peace series before but only b/c the few times it has been offered by one of the churches in our area we haven't been able to go b/c of scheduling conflicts. As for giving up, this past year we moved in w/ our in-laws in order to get out of debt. (I have the best in-laws, I mean they gotta be to let all 5 of us live with them). It was hard to put alot of my stuff in storage and give up my house but we really want to build our dream house one day and having no debt gets us much closer to that dream.
Oh my word! I am a huge Dave Ramsey fan! I try to listen to his talk show everyday. We also love what he says, but have a hard time practicing his teachings. I did the FPU at home, read his books, and listened to his cds so I feel a little more knowledgeable. However, I just wish that I would be better at sticking to his teachings...that is my goal this next year. I did start the envelope system and I really like it. I also saved up cash for this year's Christmas so that helped.Troy is a financial advisor and mostly agrees with everything that he says, but he does disagree with paying off the school loans since we can get a better return on our money investing it. We also have one credit card for vacations but we try to pre pay it before the trip. Let me know if you have any tips. Maybe we can keep each other motivated. :) Hope you guys had a great Christmas! Your family is precious!
So true Christy! We took FPU & graduated. However, we do not follow it precisely. We did pay cash for all Christmas & we have no credit cards or school loans so we are sort of on the right path. I agree totally with your feelings spiritually speaking. We don't want to step out of our comfort zone even though God may be directing us to. We want to follow Christ & say we will do anything but we put stipulations on it when push comes to shove. Thanks for posting such wonderful thoughts!
